Gwinnett metal detectives busy

It's been a busy four weeks since the formation of the Gwinnett County Police Department's new metal theft unit.

WSB's Richard Sangster reports the officers assigned have investigated everything from thieves stealing from a cemetery to stealing from doctor's offices.

One hundred and forty brass vases were stolen from a metro-area cemetery and cut up. Thieves tried to sell the pieces to a metal recycler, who knew that the police unit was in business. He called them, and the arrest was made.

The unit has conducted stings offering to buy and sell metal.

The latest case involves stolen air conditioning units from a Buford physician's office. Good high-quality surveillance video has helped police get descriptions of the three suspects.
